Meet Michael

Michael Bedford is a fine art photographer and painter living in Toronto, Canada. Trained as a biologist, Michael’s work explores aspects of both the human psyche and the natural world.
“I’m interested in how we see ourselves in relation to the natural world and how this has changed over time. As technology advances, we find ourselves less and less in touch with what fundamentally makes us human and connects us – both to the earth and to each other.”

Michael uses seasonality, light, and darkness to explore various aspects of the human experience, including awe, reverence, isolation, and disconnection.
His images are shot primarily on 35mm film using a vintage camera he bought when he was 15 years old.

Light and Lack Thereof

This new collection explores the duality of light and darkness.

Growing up in a place where we experience bright, hot summers and long, cold winters, I have always been interested in the cycles of light and darkness – both in nature and within people.

Can one exist without the other?

I chose images that highlight the intensity with which the presence or absence of light can impact our emotions. I hope to encourage the viewer to search for moments of light in both big and small ways, and to remember that no matter how long the darkness lasts, the light will always re-appear.
